Chancellor Klein Announces Schools Closure TomorrowDue to anticipated inclement weather conditions, all New York City public schools will be closed tomorrow, February 10, 2010. All after-school activities, PSAL events, and all other events taking place in school buildings will also be canceled. While travel conditions to school in the morning may not be difficult, the weather is expected to worsen as the day progresses, complicating dismissal. We are making this decision today to give parents as much time as possible to make alternative plans for tomorrow. Re-siting of High School for Excellence and Innovation (06M423) and Co-location with J.H.S. 52 in School Building M052Dear Parents of High School for Excellence and Innovation (06M423, "HSEI"),
The goal of the New York City Department of Education (DOE) is to ensure that all students obtain an excellent education and graduate from high school prepared to lead productive adult lives. We know that every student can succeed academically if given the tools and support they need to do so. If a school persistently fails to help its children make progress towards graduation, the DOE must seek new ways give its students – and their community – a greater opportunity to succeed. To that end, the DOE has proposed moving HSEI,an existing transfer school, from its current location in Community School District 6 ("District 6") to school building M052 (hereinafter referred to as "M052"), located at 650 Academy Street, Manhattan in Community District 3. The proposal must be voted on and approved by the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) prior to implementation. We anticipate that the Panel will vote on several proposals, including this one, on Ferbruary 24, 2010. You are Invited to Share your Feedback
All community members will have the opportunity to share feedback about this proposal at two joint public hearings. The first hearing tentatively will be held on February 11, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. at 650 Academy Street, Manhattan. The second hearing tentatively will be held on February 22, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. at 4111 Broadway, Manhattan. There will not be a question and answer period during the hearing. Questions about the proposal can be directed to Kim Wong at the Office of Portfolio Planning (by phone at 212-374-5049 or via email at Portfolio@schools.nyc.gov). Speaker sign-up will begin 30 minutes before each hearing and close 15 minutes after the start. If the grade reconfiguration proposal receives final approval from the PEP, what would this decision mean for you and your child(ren)? HSEI will co-locate with J.H.S. 52 at M052. M052 will have sufficient space for HSEI and J.H.S. 52 to operate at full organizational capacity. The move of HSEI will make space available for HSEI to complete its phase-in and operate at scale. Beginning September 2010, students currently attending HSEI in M856 will be served in its new location at M052.
Sincerely, Elaine Gorman Manhattan High School Superintendent H-S-E-I!
